WHEN MUSIC SPEAKS TO YOUR SOUL

A new video on the soul piercing power of music.

I’m an absolute music junkie. The right song at the right moment is a metaphysical event. It’s a reality bleed-through effect, whereby suddenly and all-at-once, a song comes on to match the moment that’s unfolding so exquisitely it pierces your soul and hurls you into cinematic ecstasy. It’s like suddenly you’re in the movie and this is the soundtrack of your life.

HOW CAN THIS BE?

And What the hell is going on? Is this all in our heads? What is this experience?

Psychologist Jordan Petersen described it like this: “sometimes the objective world and the narrative world touch… you know that’s Jungian Synchronicity… and I’ve seen that many times in my own life.. and I think it’s unbelievable”

Synchronicity. Yes. You know those moments—When the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. When the world of your inner life, your private dreams, your aches and pains, are uncannily and miraculously reflected in the outer, “objective” world. And you’re like: “I’m living in a simulation” Suddenly, you believe in magic! The world shines with effervescence!

I won’t pretend to know for sure how to account for these hyper/meaningful coincidences, when music written decades ago seems to have been written only for you and perfectly sculpted to match your experience! I mean wow!

(I’m also aware we tend to look for meaningful patterns even when they aren’t there — like seeing faces in the clouds)

It’s not always easy to parse between projection and perception 😜

And yet I wonder…

If “music is “proof” the human race is greater than it knows”… and if “art is the lie that reveals the truth”, then perhaps we can speculate that creative expression, that art, is a glimpse of some kind of aesthetic sublime, a realm beyond what Alain DeBotton calls the “literal grid”.. a place as real as the objective world, but with its own dream logic!
